Moro Kris aka The Silver Surfer
 

IMHO, one of the best feeling is finding an old warrior that's been neglected for a long time. of course, there's instances that they should be left alone, but this one was begging to be rejuvenated back to how it was in his heyday. i did left the dent on the pommel since it looks like it happened a long time ago. not knowing the circumstances on how it happened, i decided to just let it be. it does add character...

now, all spiffed up, it has retained all his previous beauty. i know it's weird, but i name my swords, lol. the first name that popped up in my head is The Silver Surfer...
kakatua is big; 3" in length and 2" wide. total length is 27" with the blade at 22". another unusual aspect is the curved gangya. this is the only second time i've seen this.

Naming your swords isn't weird, it's following on a long tradition.
.....Calling it 'Silver Surfer' on the other hand.... ;)

thanks! not a big comic book fan, it's just that i guess, with all the silver on the handle, it's the first name that popped up, lol..

Did you take the hilt completely off to reseat it properly into the tang?

yep.. the wood inside the handle pretty much shrunk, and in the process, pushed the tang out, so i had to re-drill it.
lucky thing, the baka2x survived, considering the strap wasn't attached and it slid pretty easy.

detlef, i already did. not your typical bold typographic type lamination, instead it's very subtle and tight pattern but very hard to catch on camera, mostly close to the edge. didn't want to turn it black by etching it some more, so i just left it as it is.

of note is the fuller on blade. kinda remind me of some european style...

it was a fixer upper, to say the least, so i got it for cheap. as you can see, the blade was manhandled, strap for the baka2x was coming off, and when i finally got it, the pommel was hanging on one nail, and it was practically hanging (the pommel.i had to disassemble the whole thing so i can work on it individually. it took pretty much a good part of the day trying to remove the tarnish (which i think it was a mixture of cosmoline and tarnish actually). then i took it to work trying to figure out how to fastened the pommel securely. luckily, a guy i work with who's into revolutionary war and lifestyle suggested he can fashion a nail from a brass wire. so off to the shop we go. i drilled a guide hole using a 1/16" drill bit right under the pommel's beak, then with the nail he made carefully peened it thru the hole. it's the bigger brass nail...

so i thought it was all done. i was ready to put it all back together when The Ancient One, which i commissioned Battara to work on finally arrived. this was on this thread, another project that was three years in the making:

when i saw the polish on this kris, it just blew my mind! i was like, "Hail No... i gotta get the Silver Surfer sheen to this!"

my polish job looked pale compared to this, so off to Batara he goes. i got it back early this week, and it was put back together. the strap was tricky since it was pretty fragile, and didn't know at first on how to fold it the way it was done without leaving any slack. after much deliberation, and looking at the other krisses, it all came together.
also attaching is a closeup of the lamination. kinda hard to capture like i said, but you could pretty much see it...

I was also really glad to work on the other one too. In fact the other one is the nicest you have sent so far, though in rough shape originally. An early piece and I made the missing okir silver strap. Love all that silver and swassa. Also the silver is nice on the blade. Overall a great piece and if you ever want to through it way, let me know so that I can rummage......... :D

For posterity's sake, what would the origins of the Silver Surfer be (Aside from Galactus of course, haha)?

(I'm trying to fine-tune my kris origin-sniffing skills :P ) Maranao? Sulu? Maranao hilt with a Sulu blade? These are all the thoughts I have for this sword, but instinct is leaning me more towards just Maranao. :confused:

Also while I'm at it, would the scabbard be indicative of origin? What would this one tell us?

Just would like to add here: That thing is BADA$$!!! :eek:

For the silver surfer I would say that the hilt is Maguindanao while the blade and scabbard are Sulu.
