CEREMONIAL PIG KILLING CLUBS

2 Attachment(s)
TWO EXAMPLES OF CLUBS USED TO KILL PIGS INTERESTING CARVING BUT UNFORTUNATELY I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY REPRESENT. ONE IS IDENTIFIED AS FROM NEW HEBRIDES. THE SECOND ONE IS FROM VANUATU AND IS 24 INCHES LONG. FEEL FREE TO ADD PICTURES OF OTHER EXAMPLES OR INFORMATION. :)

I think they're stylized faces, or in the case of the New Hebrides model, two faces in a Janus configuration.

The interesting thing with these mallets is that you hit with the beard. There may be some symbolism there. (or not).

Best,

F

New Hebrides is the old name for Vanuatu. Two more from "Arts of Vanuatu" Hawai Uni Press.
