Persian Khanjar For Comment

Picked this up recently. Looks like a Persian khanjar with a 12 inch blade possibly wootz? I figure 1800-1870? Comments welcome.

The last picture definitely shows a wootz pattern, so congratulations on a nice khanjar. My guess on the dating would be late Qajar - not very descriptive, I know. ALEX and others who know much more about Persian arms should be able to provide a more exact time frame.

Regards,
Teodor

Very nice Lew, you come up some fine ones.
I'll be coming east in April, I'll have to find out where you go shopping.

Warren in Arizona

Thank you, Teodor. Your observations are absolutely correct. Wootz it is.
The blade does look Persian, anywhere from late 18th to late 19th Century, and safe to say mid 19th. The hilt is Indo-Persian: being coftgaried opposite to chiselled or engraved makes it hard to attribute. My pure guess is that it originally had ivory/walrus hilt, but it was broken/damaged and replaced with the present hilt (based on the fact that the blade has nice chiselled and gold inlayed decoration at forte, but the hilt is less elaborate silver coftgari).
Very nice and attractive jambiya, Lew.

The dagger arrived yesterday and it has a drop dead wootz pattern the etch job seems old or original I spot treated a couple shiney spots along the edge but otherwise it is real nice. :) Will try and post better pics tomorrow.

Congrats Lew,

Nice to see a sheath with it and the little suspension looks attached too.

Lighting is bad today but here you the best I can do. The dagger needs a good polish and etch in a couple of spots but otherwise a nice piece.
