Scarce Dayak shield
3 Attachment(s)
Today I was lucky to find this quite unknown but scarce type of Dayakshield.
And I was wondering if there where any other members with similar types of shields. regards, Arjan. |
Hi Arjan,
You really have to see this one in real to appreciate it. :) One should take the time to make an archive of all Dayak shield designs that can often be found on postcards and in old books. There are so many different decorations and styles. I have never seen anything like this before. I don't believe there are any big Dayak collectors amongst the forumites anymore. (since Cyclura and Dajak left) You are probably on this quest alone  Lucky that you van take a shield and sword on your quest ;) |
I looked at all the photo's I have of shields (my computerdatabase, museum databases, books etc.), but I can't find a similar shield like Arjan's.
However I have found a little similarity of the "spiderlike" things that are painted on both ends of the shield. It is in the book of A.R. Hein, page 209, Fig.25. And also in the same book, page 212, Fig. 30. Those shields depicted there are from southeast Borneo. Sorry, I have no time left to take photos of the plates in the book at the moment. Maurice |
There is also a motif that looks like a row of eyes, like in this thread.
