My friends, this must be a persian shield.
The kind that stops our edged weapons, nice and sturdy :) It has 8 cartouches with letters all around. Unfotunatly i cannot read farsi (i suppose it is farsi). I wish if anyone of you can read it, or has a friend that can read it, please give a translation. At least the general idea. |

Classic Persian Dahl buckler of late manufacture from Qajar era, might as well be from nowadays teritory of Pakistan, I wish Yani you would show us the back too (by the way great shots of the frobt details) ... I doubt was used for battle, at the most it belonged to some guardian retainer or house decoration ... Lets get a translation of the cartouches and see if the umboes are perfectly aligned with the hand grips, any padded velvet in the back left ? ...

The texts in the cartouches are not in farsi. The letters seem to be Georgian or Armenian (I would vote for Georgian, but I'm absolutely not sure...). But certainly not farsi.

Yianni,
I am alittle worried, i have just seen an identical shield in the house of a friend some days ago. His is from Georgia, as the seller told him... It seems very similar and i remember it didnt had remains of old cloth behind... Could be a reproduction? I have just heard that in Georgia they do reproductons of kindjal scabbards by "using leftover machines from te soviet era space programme"!!! The language seems Georgian. |
Yeap, it's georgian, half of the signatures are upside down.
|
Ok, they are all upside down. The first kartouche reads kfti soa.
|
I was so sure it was persian that I didnt ask the origin of the shield! :o Very stupid behavior for someone who "search" edged weapons
The question remains, can anyone read it? Eftihis, it is the same shield, your friend is also my friend :D |
Kartouches say:
"Our God Chesus Christ, protect us from evil" |
Rivkin
You are great! Thank you very much! |
Right on, Rivkin, good job. Design wise, how can you make the difference between ,,Persian,, and ,,Georgian,, type (if any) other than the text in this case ?
|
I stand corrected, I forgot one kartouche - better translation is:
upalo kriste dzeo gvtisao borotisagan dagvipare Chesus Christ, son of god, from evil protect us ! K.Rivkin |
