Second purchase
Here another knife from the same source as the sewar.
Could this be a 'siraui' ? The scabbard is shaped like the sheath of a keris, but it contains an ordinary knife. The blade is single-edged, without pamor. The wooden handle fits very well into the hand. The crossguard is made out of copper. Total length : 33 cm. Again : any comment is appreciated. ;) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...eelding058.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...eelding059.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...eelding060.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...eelding061.jpg |

One would almost think so. Those kerislike scabbards are often found on siraui. But the knife and guard have more a Philipine look to me. I would say an assembled piece. |
Hi Freddy,
all what I am able to say is stated by Henk already. Interesting piece. sajen |
Hello Freddy,
Not a siraui (neither of the 2 types), for sure. It's true that this keris-like scabbard is quite often found with siraui; however, it may more hint at the origin (western Sumatra?) of this piece rather than being restricted to a single blade type. The hilt does somewhat resemble a peurawot (turned upside down though). I'd guess that the crossguards were added later - any hints? The blade looks like a decent EDC design to me. An etch to bring out laminations may give additional info. AFAIK, such a multi-use knife blade would be most likely called piso/pisau. Regards, Kai |
