Nice one. I like it very much.

Indian or Persia? I vote for India.

Qajar or older? I vote for early 19th century

Wootz? I vote YES.

Don't like the scabbard thou. Any thoughts how should I restore it?

Maybe someone could make you a matched koftgari pattern steel scabbard to fit over the original .

Beautiful .

ALEX 1st July 2009 05:58 PM

Most certainly Indian. I do not see a wootz pattern.
Personally, I'd test-etch to see if it is wootz, and this would be as far as I'd go.

Indian and I see some type of pattern on the edge.

Is it more 19th century or more likely 18th? I can't find that style in any book I have.

Scabbard restoration

I suggest sending the scabbard to Atlantia !! :D

Look at the excellent job he has just done.

You're a Gentleman Royston! Thanks :)

Valjhun,
Your Dagger is beautiful.
I would say Indian. If you have a look at this Khanda, the koftgari is certainly similar. I definately think your dagger is Hindu.
The blade doesn't look wootz to me, but thats not to diminish the beauty of the carved steel. Its a lovely piece indeed.
Date I would say mid 19th, but it could be a bit either way. Certainly the style of gold koftgari is identical on many weapons in books attributed to 'mid 19thC'

Nice khanda, Atlantia

I've always wanted one just like this.

thank you for your comment.

Valjhun,
Yes you have a nice dagger, congratulations:).
Like Lew write, the blade may be wootz, but the scabbard looks as if it is original, so I would leave it as it is.

Gene,
Nice khanda, do you know from where it is? I am sure you could find out if you tried.

Jens
