MOROCCO OR EGYPT PERHAPS  THE HAT LOOKS SORT OF LIKE A FEZ AND THE FEATURES LOOK MORE ARABIC THAN NEGROID. JUST A GUESS AND I HOPE I CAN USE THAT ONE SCIENTIFIC RACE WORD WITHOUT GETTING IN TROUBLE. IT DOSENT STRIKE ME AS A TOURIST ITEM AND LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE MADE IT BY HAND PERHAPS FOR PERSONEL USE.

Barry

I'm thinking more colonial West African or Congo? I remember Tim having something similar?

Tim Simmons 1st February 2009 07:46 PM

Interesting stick. I do not think it is a club but I do think it is from French parts of Africa. It could well be Moroccan but with all that taboo on the human image, perhaps it is more likely from French West Africa and there abouts. Just a guess.

Tim

At only 21 inches long what could it be if not a club or septre? Too short for walking stick I would think? Has good age and does not look like it was cut down in size?

You could be right Lew. I did not notice any sizes. That happens after ? pints of London Pride. :o

It looks like a folk art walking cane, probably cut-down. Could be from any of a number of areas, most likely of European origin.

Don't worry Vandoo, I agree with you. I see nothing negroid at all in that carving. i'm no expert but I dont see recognize any western african influence.

Tim Simmons 3rd February 2009 08:56 AM

Yes nothing Negriod but something very Gallic. A French calonial officer rather like the Napoleon 111 head on coins. It looks like African work to me, French West Africa.

PERHAPS IT WAS CARVED IN AFRICA BY A FRENCH SOLDIER IN HIS SPARE TIME. I KNOW THE BRITISH OFFICERS CARRIED SWAGGER STICKS PERHAPS THE FRENCH OFFICERS DID ALSO. THE SHAFT LOOKS A BIT LIGHT FOR A EFFECTIVE CLUB AND ITS TOO SHORT FOR A CANE (ALTHOUGH NAPOLEAN WAS SAID TO BE VERY SHORT :p ) SO MY GUESS IS SWAGGER STICK OR BATON.

Lew 3rd February 2009 06:07 PM

I think this from the Ivory Coast carved locally for a French soldier a swagger stick most likely? 1890s as far as age goes. I should have it in a few days will look to see if it was cut down from something longer. The position of the head seems awkwardly placed for a cane or walking stick?

Lew 8th February 2009 09:35 PM

The arrived and it seems now the seller is stating it's an old riding crop which I am inclined to believe  Oh well that was an expensive lesson for me :(
