Hello Ben,

This weird hilt seems still odd to me - I wouldn't want to rule out a later (but still fairly old) refitting job. It just doesn't vibe with any traditional hilt from the region as well as basic ergonomics... BTW, how is that silver clamp fastened to the hilt/ferrule?

That blade has an awfully nice twistcore pattern, congrats!
I'd suppose it to be late 19th century, possibly around the Spanish-American war (a safer guess may be 1870-1930). The blade originates from Mindanao (either Maguindanao or Maranao manufacture) and was probably brought over to Borneo. The scabbard feels more Sulu/Borneo to me.

Regards,
Kai

Nice analysis Kai.

I still might go a little earlier than that. Also I would narrow it down to Magindanao blade.

Hello Jose,

Yes, the blade seems "macho" enough to fit well with a Maguindanao origin... ;)
I forgot to ask Ben how long the blade actually is. If this is a large blade, then the hilt seems more like a one and a half hander...

What's the earliest dated blade with such sharp/pointy start of the 2nd curve that you've seen, Jose?

Regards,
Kai

Hello Ben,

Quote:

the blade is 47 cm
18.5 inches, that's smaller than I expected! That also explains the "oversized" scabbard.

Seems like a later rendition of an "archaic" kris style to me.

BTW, those other 2 kris are also nice, especially the one with the brass hilt. Could you also post pics of these in separate threads? Thanks!

Regards,
Kai
