R.D.C. Evans

It is with great sadness that I report the death of Roger Evans on the 18th December 2015 . Roger as many of you will know was a world authority on bayonets and many will know his definitive book 'The Plug Bayonet' .

Extremely sorry to hear such bad news. I happen to have a copy of such work signed by him.

It's always a sorrow to hear of another's passing and, especially for us, when it is a scholar in a particularly unique field. RIP-

This is a very sad notice, and Roger Evans was one of the kindest and most helpful gentlemen and scholars I have known. I still have many notes from conversations we had as we discussed many aspects of markings on edged weapons. In researching for the thread Cathey has posted on the riding sword in fact, I was consulting one his many outstanding articles on markings in JAAS.
Many years ago he used to write a column called "Cold Steel" in which he would focus on a bayonet form and offer amazing detail on each one. His great book " The Plug Bayonet" includes his phenomenal insight into the history of these and again, his work on markings has become absolutely essential.

Rest in peace Roger, and know your work will always be with us to help us in our studies, just as you always did.
