Ivory hilted Kris on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/Philippine-Moro-...QQcmdZViewItem

Wow... As we say in Zamboanga "maka pacha suegra." Worth kicking your mother in-law. just kidding. :D :D :D

Spunjer 11th December 2005 11:31 AM

yeah, you got that right: W  W!!! excellent piece, tho. complete, with all the trimmings. but at $1850.00? i guess, if i had that much dinero too....

here's one that i didn't quite understand:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1
for $500.00 tho? it's nice and all, but not at that price. i reckon bidder's depression kicked in...

and to think that he was offered $2000.00 for both before the bidding was over, lol... that was too funny :D

BluErf 11th December 2005 12:43 PM

For a given quality, flashy krises and kerises always fetch more, I guess. :)

Spunjer 11th December 2005 01:20 PM

...IMHO good presentation by the seller helped out a lot, too. i remember there was an ivory hilted kris that came out about 6 or so month ago, and it 'only' went for $750.00...

still shaking my head on the other kris, tho...

BluErf 11th December 2005 01:28 PM

Oh yes, the pictures are very important. They can make good pieces look dull, or make mediocre pieces look like a thousand. :)

But sometimes, we pray for bad pictures because then, experience comes into play and there is usually less competition. :D But of course, even experienced collectors get tripped sometimes.

Battara 12th December 2005 07:59 AM

BluErf, that did happen to me one year and, well, look at my avatar. :D

Battara, how much did you pay for it? The way that ivory kris auction closed, I'm beginning to feel there's one really lucky forumite who got this blade from me off ebay a few months back ...

Ian 12th December 2005 10:40 PM

Another ivory kris ...

Here's another one that just finished.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=6586241323

Someone got a real bargain compared with yesterday's extravaganza. Only $1576.00 plus S&H.

Rick 12th December 2005 11:31 PM

It's only a hunk of ivory folks ,not even a scabbard ; move along ...... ;)

Well, Tagalanao, years ago I paid around $250-300.00 on eBay (would have to go back to my records to find the correct amount). It was without scabbard and a 1920s blade. I tested the material and it is swaasa and silver bands with ivory. I have since made a scabbard for it, also with silver and swaasa bands.

The one you posted is really nice and it looks like there are swaasa and silver bands as well.

By the way, here are pictures of the scabbard and hilt just for fun :D (I'll look for a closeup of one of the bands and post later):

But Rick, it's so nice and shiney. :D

Never mind not having the money at this time ( :o ), the only thing that bothers me about this barong is the style - no beak.

VANDOO 13th December 2005 02:30 AM

YEP!! TIME TO MOVE ON THOSE TWO ITEMS HAVE CROSSED OVER FROM ETHINOGRAPHIC WEAPON TO THE ART INVESTMENT SIDE AND THE AIR IS WAY TOO THIN UP THERE FOR ME. THEY WERE PRETTY AND SHINEY THOUGH :)

Rick 13th December 2005 02:37 AM

I was wondering about the lack o' beak myself , hmmmmmmm ...

Oh yeah , I'll never have that kind of money to blow .

Bill 13th December 2005 04:05 AM

I was going to bid on this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...e=STRK:MEWA:IT ; nice old piece. Don't worry about the beak, the whole pummel is gone; could of been ivory at one time, but still went for a good buck.

I think it is intact, Rick. Just one of the more minimal kakatua in terms of the beak. Must say it is a nice piece of ivory carving.

Nice shandigan blade. IMHO the pommel could not have been ivory. it wouldn't have been a match to the brass ferrule. Just my opinion though.

I put a bid on that barung, but didn't want to pay more for something that wasn't fully intact. I'm surprised that it went for so much. Anyways, I'm with you that it couldn't have been ivory. If I had won that barung, I would have had a new pommel carved out of carabao horn to compliment the brass punto. Carabao horn would have been more appropriate than ivory in this case IMHO.

You lucky guy! :)

I don't even want to remind myself of the amount I paid for my Mindanao kris...

kino 13th December 2005 01:30 PM

IMO, the ivory hilted Barung's beak had broken off and had been reshaped. It looks off balance with a large plume (0.02).

VVV 13th December 2005 01:53 PM

Kino,
I asked the seller about it but he sent me a picture that didn't show any signs of a break. Maybe it broke off a long time ago?
Anyway I also think it looks unbalanced no matter what.

Michael

wow! forgot all about this one, lol. junggayan barung hypnotized me. yup, it did go for a pretty penny for something that's not complete. as for an ivory pommel, i was checking cato's book and found this one on page 35 (plate 17). it look sharp with ivory cap, but like you said zel, with the brass punto (or is it?), i and i thinks karrbaw horn would look even sharper...

as for the ivory; it prolly broke in its early years and was worked on to blend with the rest...

Battara 14th December 2005 12:32 AM

Of course, if it had an ivory beak, it could have gone for $2000.

VANDOO - art investment? Hadn't thought of that.

BluErf - I was very lucky. The pictures were terrible and thus I was the only one bidding on it. Yet I could see the potential beyond the pictures and asked for extra emailed pictures. :D

I also agree with the other barung being not of ivory. Silver at most but probably horn or brass.

Here is the promised closeup of a portion of the scabbard for my ivory-swaasa-silver kris:

Spunjer 15th December 2005 07:04 PM

nice crosspiece, battara... what type of wood is it?

Battara 16th December 2005 04:38 AM

Thank you Spunger. The crosspiece is solid burled walnut root wood.

Ian 19th December 2005 05:44 PM

My, my ...

Not ivory, but went for a lot more than I thought it would.

Rick 19th December 2005 07:53 PM

Now that IS interesting ; bidding war perhaps ?
I see nothing very unusual about this sword ; anyone else ?

nechesh 19th December 2005 09:07 PM

Wow Ian, that does seem a bit much. I literally have this kris' identical twin ( my blade is only 21 1/2"). I paid $235 for it just 6 months ago and my sheath is both intact and original to the blade. BTW, mine was not an ebay auction.

Ian 19th December 2005 09:31 PM

Rick: I don't see anything special about this one -- somewhat unusual hilt maybe, but otherwise not very old and not very interesting.

David: You paid about what I would expect this one to have gone for. I guess someone was in the holiday spirit, or had a little too much holiday spirit. :D You may have a sale to the unlucky bidder who missed out on this one. ;)

Battara 20th December 2005 06:17 AM

Yeah I'm with you guys on this latest one: nothing spectacular about it, certainly not $500 worth. Nechesh you paid right for yours.

I thought Moro leveled out - this shows otherwise (or just a bidding war  ).
