Nice Little Gunong

Well, while looking for the more Spanish influenced Philippine pieces that I love so much I came across this nice early 20th century gunong. Fittings are coin silver with the guard made from thin coin silver plates over a copper core. The top ring of the scabbard, the very bottom plate on the scabbard tip and the ring between the silver and wood of the hilt are also copper. Unfortunately, the guard has acquired some damage over the years, but other than that this piece still remains in good condition. The end plate has the name Fox with Mindanao 1912 engraved on it. Photos are after a light cleaning. All comments and added information on this piece would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Robert

Hello Robert,

nice little and honest fellow! :) Would agree with you, early 20th century.

Detlef

Thank you for your kind words Detlef, I quite like it myself. Though it does not have the more ornate embellishments of the later examples of its kind its simple styling is still quite attractive. One other point on this is that the upper edge of the blade is sharp from tip to guard unlike a lot of the later examples of this blade style where the upper edge is sharpened from the tip back but stopping short of the guard leaving a section of the spine with a flat surface.

Best,
Robert
