Hello everybody,

I just bought this big candleholder in a small ''2nd hand, everything to sell'' Shop,

I really like the dragon head so I bought it, too if it can be a big tourist stuff...

I wonder about the origin ?
It was written chinese candleholder but I do't think so.

Looks a little like the head of tibetan trumps or Thai dragons.
It seems made of silvered brass or paktong.

It don't seems really recent but can it be a little old ?

All comments welcomed

Thank you !

Interesting piece. Looks like it could also be made from white metal/white bronze. Nice.

Yeah, I'm thinking more Thai or Burmese.

These are not traditional Thai, Tibetan, or Burmese according to a Thai friend of mine who deals in oriental art objects. They look Chinese to me. White brass or white copper, also called Cuprum. Basically an alloy of scrap metals...

Variations on a theme, these copied ancient Chinese Han and Tang dynasty forms, slightly changed to suit the maker and no lack of artistic licence.

You can see a lot similar on eBay searching for 'Chinese dragon candle holder'. It is fairly safe to assume any real valuable 'antiques' coming from China are quite recent, as the export of proper cultural antiques is forbidden. Caveat Emptor.

Still, I like them. If I used candles I'd buy a smaller set for myself. There are some awful ugly ones on eBay too.

Oh I agree. Very recent.

Chinese? Well they copy from everyone.

Hello,
thank you we find it !
Most a copy of Tang dynasty dragon...
Sadly not an original piece ;) but I like it and find it's well made
( not as other candle holder I found on ebay )
For 50 bucks it can't be a treasure... :)

Kind regards

I found this one, 23 cm high gilt bronze, from china,

found three more at 17cm just like it but ungilt green bronze for 5% of the gilt one. (20x the gilt one's price!)
