Folks I need help in Id'ing the little knife, it appears to be from the middle east, it is 8" long, brass or bronze metal with a nickel or nickel silver plating, it has a fish carved on both sides of the handle, some type of script on one side of the sheath and a flight of birds on the other, there is some decoration on the upper blade on both sides, the blade is not sharp and does not appear to have ever been cutting sharp. There is wear with the brass color showing through, None of it will not hold a magnet, except for the two rings on the side that holds the ribbon, the ribbon is hand stiched. Any help will be much appreciated..
Thanks...Burt...

My best guess, it is a souvenir letter-opener from the Middle East.

Dom 17th February 2012 02:30 AM

to be from Middle-East ... should be, but
I never saw a dagger, or letter opener with that look

about the "fish",
in Libya, many bedouin silver bracelets have that pattern
but in 3 years residence in this country,
I never saw, one single dagger, or one sword:shrug:

otherwise ... guns, as well as pistols, revolver ... plenty :p

Touristic 'khanjar' in the Syrian style, overall brass construction, nickel plated. Same construction pieces may be found either straight like this one or the more common curved, janbiyah style, sometimes with a fish tail sheath. Very popular in the markets of Jerusalem, Jaffa, Nazareth, Damascus...

Hi Burt
I will try the best to get it, hope so, that somebody else will do it,
because my translator is in Cairo until mid of March
I ll forward a pic, and request her help,
but it's under reserve
to illustrate my comments about fish design on Libyan silver bracelet,
here, I add pic's
on spot, the explanations about that "fish" was "mark of the jeweler" (?)
but could be also, a sign of prosperity (?)

My opinion is that this object is a crude knife made to open the correspondence from the office. Not a self defense weapon but can be put on a panoply. A very nice knife. :)

Good morning Burt
the translation is done for a part
- one word not read
- "AL SALAM" either "PEACE" or "GREETING"
that's it
