Trench knife made from something old

2 Attachment(s)
This came in an auction lot with others. Never really paid it much attention until I noticed the marks on the "blade".
I am guessing it is a home made trench knife. The question is, what did someone ruin to make it ?
The remains of the blade are allmost square in cross-section. length is 26cm ( 10 1/2 ") with a 13 cm ( 5.25 " ) "blade.
the pommel is brass and may be original. The cross-guard is brass and not original.

All comments welcome.

Roy

Kind of looks like a repurposed fencing foil or epee?

Just a guess, maybe it is the tang of a broken saber or epee.

I think you're right. A broken fencing foil blade, but with a small sword brass pommel.

Yes, most probably; the type of symbols i had in a pair of fencing 'fleurets'. Still i think someone made a monster out of it ... if you don't mind me saying so :o .

Re-using broken blade from modern era fencing weapons has been very common ever since. Once the flexible blade is broken, the remaining parts are usually pretty stiff, and of high quality steel that will hold a vicious point. The common object is sword-cane, but also every kind of hideout dagger.

Of course; but there are many ways to do it; with good taste or ... here i go again :o

Thanks Gents

I know it is an abomination but perhaps someone really needed it in a hurry.
