Hi ,

Here is a set consisting of a cabasset and a breastplate, late 16th, early 17th century.
With its original leather lap belt.

Great pieces, Thomas; the leather belt definitely a valuable asset.

The cabasset; Spanish ...Italian ... no marks ? . The rivets are plain round, not rosettes; a period replacement ?. Does the top have the famous pear stalk ?

The breastplate; must be for cavalry, due the opening in the lower front, right ? ... I don't know the exact term :o.

This set is normally German. The cabasset is in one piece, without rosettes, the rivets are indeed original. It is a simple infantry model. It has an interesting period repair on the side. There is no manufacturer marking. For the breastplate, here is a complete model with tassets, gorget ... (photo at the zeughaus altes museum). For the cavalry I don't know, but the troops could wear such a set.

Sorry to play the stubborn Thomas; i had the firm idea that such detail is not an infantry/cavalry dual option but that it is so designed to prevent the breastplate not to conflict with the horse saddle .. if i make myself understood. Does the caption of the example at the zeughaus altes museum mention that is for infantry ... or cavalry ?

I don't know, but I think you're right. I had never thought about this detail, but it is consistent. :)
