As a rule, acetone is the first thing to try.

Acetone is fine for the blades, just don't get it on any horn pieces (if any) on the handles). It will dry them out and sometimes turn them grey.

Agree, acetone. Then repolish to at least 600 wet or dry, (1200 is even better), degrease, again with acetone. Then use Phosphoric Acid (metal etch) right out of the bottle, no need to dilute. It should give you a nice silver background against the darker wootz crystals. At least it has most of the time for me anyway................Dave.

What I would do:
1. Clean the blades well with White Spirit (less aggresive than acetone and no damage in case it gets on th hilt) and dry it well
3. Remove all active rust with Renaissance Metal De-corroder (generous local application with a brush, leave it a few minutes, then scrubing with a clean toothbrush - repeat if necessary)
4. Clean the metal de-corroder with tissue, then wash the remaining de-corroder with water, then dry it well with tissue and with a warm (not hot) air blower (hair drier)
5. Repeat step 1
6. Gently polish the blades with grit 2000-3000 (do not attempt to remove the pitting from previous corosion), and can aso try gently polishing the hilts with grit 3000-7000
7. Etch the blades for wootz (see one of my previous postings for etching wootz).
Regards,
Marius :)
