Is it me or is the grip on this viking era sword they found there way too big?

I suspect it's due to it being in exceptionally good condition after surviving in a relatively oxygen free environment, rather than heavily oxidised (therefore thinner) after being buried underground.

What I mean is it seems rather long. I thought the grips were usually relatively short and the idea is that one would actually grip the pommel, i.e.:

But I'm not super familiar with Viking era swords so perhaps there was a lot more variation in grip length than I am aware of.

EDIT: Or perhaps the pommel is actually incomplete and the bottom of it has actually moved up the tang over the years?

OK I understand, sorry I misunderstood your question.
I know nothing of Viking swords but see your point, the grip certainly doesn't look as small as many images.

Perhaps there are experts on viking era swords on the vikingsword forums who could comment? :D
