keris coteng selut

Greetings folks,

I am restoring a keris coteng with a silver hulu. I have seen these without selut and with different types of selut.

Should these traditionally have a selut, and if so, what kind of selut?

Thanks in advance.

Jose

if the hilt doesn't have an integrated selut then I suppose you should endeavour to find one.

Most silver hilts that I see on line seem to have an integrated selut , some seem to have an additional selut looking a bit Bugis-like as a simple cup made of silver too even when the hilt has a selut in the shape of a truncated cone cup, but I have seen some also showing an occasional " ring" similar to a Balinese one.

I am not sure of how " codified " are things in the Patani, Coteng world and I think that many seen on line may have been modified out of their natural ethnologic context . I other words there seem to be more outside of the areas where they should come from than where they are traded in. The fact that they are relatively rare and command high proces maks them susceptible to be objects which are often re-created

Good point. I heard the same thing from a former formite and friend. Having an integral selut means less restoration work for me.

Many thanks.

Hi Jose,

Most coteng keris have lost their fittings over many decades. I've searched a little bit in old threads, have a look inside and decide! ;) I think that it's not relevant if the handle is from wood or silver. Do you mean pendokok or uwer? An uwer it will have originally but not a pedokok (selut).

Good point. I now have pictures.

Vielen Dank, Detlef!

Here is how I got the hilt.

This is what I did with the hilt - I cleaned it up and made a new nose for it.

Everything came with it, even the secondary scabbard. However the scabbard was made for this blade.

I was also told that the selut was integral to the rest of the hilt.

That's a very admirable repair José. :)

You just get better and better with your work, Jose..

Very nice indeed. :)

Many thanks to you both.

This was on my bucket list. True - the original scabbard would have been best, but this was so affordable for me and I took the opportunity.
