Rencong dodgy pic gamble.
 

I am still trying to crack this region, that is finding a good example I can afford or more truthfully for what I think they are worth. I am gambling a good lunch for two here. More than one wants to loose if it can be helped. The pictures are not good, The seller says it is copper and silver "tarnished". I know some silver does go yellowish. There appears to be a fuller to the blade so I am assuming there is some strength. The pictures with such bad light and focus give little real idea, just have to wait and see. Fingers crossed:eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

It a bit more than just fish and chips. Something to start with, seafood, then good quality fish and chips and a bottle of drinkable wine then coffe, to be realistic. We will see.

Considering the fact that these pictures are really bad, I wouldn't be surprised your next post after arrival would be the message that you went with the Mrs. to a good restaurant to celebrate.

I have seen rencong between Eur 25 and Eur 2500.

How much is any of our junk worth is a good point.

I think what I mean is, as I do not have a passion for this area but out of general interest a reasonable example to add to the junk pile would be nice. The aim of adding with just general interest is to get things at a price one could sell on when needed and get your money back or even make a little. I just feel so much of this stuff is a bit on the high side. It could be here tomorrow.

I will not bore you all with pictures. Some you win some you loose. I have not lost for quite a while so I can take it on the chin. Ouch :)

Sorry about that Tim. I went through quite a few pieces of Indonesian rubbish before fully understanding and getting a feel for old verses new.

Get as many books as you can and as much exposure as you can to authentic pieces.....but even so expect some frustrations along the way. None of us has 'the perfect eye' and we can all tell stories of our own errors.

Too bad about that punch on the chin.
But it doesn't seem to be a KO so... take 5 and get back in the ring again :D :D

Check the forum (search) for rencong and or rentjong.
There have been quite some nice examples posted by various forumites.

Personally I am alway suspicious about metal hilts and for me, scabbards should always be wood. although in Jean Greffioz book on keris there is one with a buffalo horn scabbard.

Hi Tim,
its a shame....but I expect many of us have regretted some of our 'buys'. Often, with so many things in life, the higher the 'risk' ....the 'higher' the chance of getting a 'dud'.
Still, on the 'bright side', for you, it doesn't happen often ...I am sure your next 'risky' acquisition will pay dividends ;)
