the jameel gallery has finally been re-opened in the V&A, after three long years of refurbishment. its really well done, and although still pretty dark (hence the bad photos) its layout is much better. there was little in the line of arms before, and unfortunately there is even less now, but there is still some wonderful art on show so its worth seeing if anyone is in the area.
the bottom shamshir is magnificent - truly stunning. in an 'inferior' way, it almost has the look of mehmet 2nds sword. its huge (but not quite as big as mehmets sword) and the gold work is wonderful. its mid 16thC and belonged to shah tahmasp.
the minbar is well known, and belonged to sultan quatbay, who let the height of mamluk oppulance and decoration.
the carpet is huge, and thought to be the finest, and oldest known in the world.

Thanks for posting the pictures BI. I glad to see that the Mamluk minbar is still there. I was hoping some pieces from the old arms and armour collection might get included, oh well, never mind.

Here's hoping that they eventually decide to refurbish and reopen the A&A galleries.

I was going to go with my wife last weekend but I got caught in heavy traffic on the M1. I'm planning on going again when the kids have their mid-term holiday.

Thanks for the heads up. I will have to visit next time I am in town. By the way...does anyone know if they are displaying the early Islamic ceramic dish from khorasan with the guy with his straight sword?
Ann :)
