I picked this one up over the summer and have assumed it is Sumatran , but cannot find an identical hilt stlyle in my references.

Any additional info on its more specific origins would be greatly appreciated.

Beautifull weapon , hit and sarong :)
It could be also from jawa.

I remember someone mentioning that there seem to be a lot of this general style of sword found on Lombok .

Mine was collected there .

Lovely pattern on the blade!

A Batu Lapak at the forte ? :)

There has also been some discussion on the form of these pommels; a hidden Makara or simply a foliate/vegetive(?) design ?

This is a nice variation .

Charles,

Could you add some additional pictures on this unusual hilt?

Very nice old hit.
In the middle it would be horn. On the top? Wood?
IMO seems a fish (?) eating another fish(?) that eating another little fish....the same of russian Matrijoska

This one is quite tricky (fishy?).
Some of the hilts of resembling swords collected in the area around Minangkabau have a hilt variation that reminds me of this one.
Instead of the Palembang Makara hilt the have a more obvious floral look, like a sprouting bud.

The hilt is all horn, no wood. The patina on the horn was part of its allure.
