Book on old Javanese Batik motifs - which?

Greetings,

as stated I am looking for information on traditional Javanese Batik motifs. What source(s) do you recommend?

Thanks,

J.

Jussi, batik motifs are of some value in helping us to read pendok motifs, but first you need to know how to read the batik motif, which is not always easy.

In recent years I've seen some very beautiful books published on batiks, but I haven't bought any of these, principally because I could not see the value ( for me) in spending the money.

There a couple of small, low priced books that can be quite useful in assisting in motif ID:-

Batik Klasik ---Hamzuri, no ISBN, and Splendid Symbols --- Gittinger, ISBN 0 19 588956 8

There are probably a lot of other affordable books that show and name batik motifs, but I use these two.

A very good book for ID of Indonesian motifs is :- Indonesian Ornamental Design --- van der Hoop. It was published in 1949, and I'd be surprised if it has not been republished.

There isn't a reprint of van der Hoop's book, yet you can find many exemplars in European antiquariats: http://www.choosebooks.com/advancedS...&author=HOOP+A
