NIAS SPEARLANCE / not a toho

I was lucky to add this rare nias lance to my collection.

length is 240 cms / not heavy, the wooden shaft is very thin.
gracefull I would say

similar examples are in Leiden and Firenze. (3rd picture = Firenze/Modigliani)

Does anyone have an idea why they are so different from the toho types ?

Toho types feel like they can be used on a boar hunt.

Best regards,
Willem

VERY NICE A EXCELLENT FIND, IT LOOKS LIKE #5 FROM THE LEFT IN THE PICTURE. DOES IT HAVE A BUTT SPIKE AND HOW FAR DOWN DOES THE WOUND METAL GO DOWN THE SHAFT.? IN NIAS THEY USUALLY HAVE SOME VILLAGE GUARDS WHO WEAR FANCY CEREMONIAL ARMOR AND LIKELY BEAR SUCH SPEARS AND A FANCY SWORD. THESE FANCY SPEARS CAN BE USED AS A WEAPON BUT SUCH EXAMPLES ARE LIKELY EMBELLISHED TO SHOW THE PRESTIGE OF THE VILLAGE OR THE POSITION AND RANK OF THE ONE CARRYING THEM. SPEAR FENCING REQUIRES A LIGHT FAST SPEAR. A HEAVY SPEAR IS GOOD FOR USING LIKE A LANCE OR THRUSTING AND OF COURSE IS GOOD TO KEEP A CHARGING BOAR OR OTHER LARGE ANIMAL FROM GETTING AT YOU.

Hello Willem,

nice spear, a shame that the ferrule is broken, any chance to repair it?

Regards,
Detlef

There is no butt spike.
The metal winding ends about 65 cms from the bottom.
The bottom is very fragile, I am really happy that this spear was never shortened.

Hello Detlef,

I am not going try to repair it.
It is very thin material and if its ruined, the spear will loose all of its charme.

Best regards,
Willem
