Bangkung for comment

Recently reset this old bangkung. I've no idea of its provenance though. Wondering if anyone else has a similar sample. It's 16in blade, 5.5in hilt. The blade has a wide fuller with some small outcroppings on the ricasso and blade tip. The hilt has a truncated silver ferrule similar to a barung's. It is nimble with modest heft. TIA!

Hello Ray,

Nice bangkung, I like the blade. When I understand you correctly you have reset the handle? Are you sure that it is the original handle? Handle style is similar to examples I've seen attributed to Palawan.

Regards,
Detlef

Halloo Detlef! Yep it's the orig handle; by reset I meant I removed the old adhesive, seperated the blade and hilt, then put them back together with modern adhesive :) interesting point on the Palawan angle!

Very nice. The fuller reminds me of the back of a quality mandau.

The same technique could be used.

Kind regards,

Beautiful knife!

Very interesting bangkung. I'm thinking a Lumad, Borneo, or maybe Palawan origin, as Detlef suggested. It's fuller and hilt are unlike any Moro bangkung I've seen. Relatively short bangkung are fairly common in my experience.
