Maguindanao 25 Luk Kris

Dear All,

nothing very refined, nevertheless a nice blade (55,5 cm) of its kind, particularly the subtle tapering to the tip.
About 40% of outer binding on handle is gone. The quite fine inner binding isn't a repair, it goes under the outer and can be seen at some places.
An interesting feature is the inserted Jalen/Tjalen (that's how it's called in Keris terminology, sorry).
The pommel is not small.

Comments are welcome!

Sweet!

Sajen 20th March 2018 08:21 PM

Very, very nice! Are you going to polish and etch the blade?

Regards,
Detlef

Robert 20th March 2018 08:58 PM

WOW  That is one very nice kris you have acquired. Not sure what you might find with a polish and etch, but it would be nice to find out. Congratulation on such a great find.

Best,
Robert

Nice - lots of luks

Gustav 21st March 2018 01:43 AM

Thank you, gentlemen!

Except for some spots of more or less active rust I will leave it as it is. It will look better with the battered handle as it is. No expectations of some special welding miracles, these pieces usually have the most simple construction, like Thilos kris:

or a kris Stefan sold a while ago:

Actually very few of these many Luk pieces are upper class, the most notable exception being:

I would be interested in your opinions, why such pieces with an exaggerated number of Luk did appear at all.

Could it be to showcase the Panday’s skill?

I can only recall seeing two kris’ with an inserted tjalen, this one makes three.

Congrats on a good catch.

CCUAL 21st March 2018 02:34 AM

29 luks

I think this is 29? if i count the luks correctly.

Well, one thing is that it can effective like a saw blade in the hands of a well trained warrior. There is a special way to use this in combat.

Also, the more luks, the more active the "snake" is and the more lethal it is.

# of luks

Chris: Nope. 25 waves all the way........Dave.

Gustav 24th March 2018 11:22 AM

Thank you all again!

Perhaps CCUAL referred to the kris in the link he provided - it's indeed a 29 Luk blade, like Thilo's.

Hello Dave, how are you? You were the one that shown me how to count the luks during the Pasadena knife show years back, may be I had forgotten how to count it. Here is the photo.

Thanks Gustav.

I think Dave thought you were referring to the original posted blade. He may not have followed your link. The one you just posted (also in your link) does indeed seem to be 29 luk. A thing of beauty as well. ;)

David 25th March 2018 05:21 AM

Yes, the entire grouping Chris shows here is outstanding! :)
