Looks like a kindjal to me. The text looks like it is painted on the blade and not so long ago.

I'm sure one of the members can read it for you

I believe it is a kindjal (some folks call the kama, most likely from
the southern Russian Caucases or somewhere like Turkistan, Kurdistan, etc.

Others can likely provide more details.

I am no specialist, but I think it is southern transcaucasia, i.e. Iran.

Thank you for the help so far

I thought I would add a few more pics of the sword

It is very Old and beat up but I like it.

I think that Iranian is looking very close to this script

I have found a lot of info on the Cossaks that shows them carrying these type blades

writing on blade

Hi Alan,
I do not know much in order to comment, but I think you've got the picture upside down in your post. I also do not know Iranian language but I know for sure the characters in the writing is Arabic. Normally, I would presumed that you need to hold the sword/dagger in your right hand and look at the blade with its tip pointing to the left. Just my opinion.

Thanks AMS

The writing is upside-down so I couldn't read it very well. But I think it says "La fata illa 'Ali, la seyf illa Zhu-l-feqqar".

"There is no youth but (or greater than) 'Ali and no sword but Zhu-l-Feqqar"

Alan62 5th January 2006 12:58 PM

Thank You Agtai
Are you reading it in Arabic?

Here is a pic flipped over
