I just receive it today ,the handle is in poor condition with some lost ,the blade is very basic without decoration but it seems to be an old mandeau in my eyes.
I would like to have some opinions about this mandau.
Best

IT LOOKS LIKE A GOOD OLD ONE TO ME I WOULD GUESS IBAN BUT THEN I AM FAR FROM AN EXPERT. THE HANDLE IS DRIED OUT AND PERHAPS SUN BLEACHED FROM A LONG PERIOD OF STORAGE. BONE AND ANTLER BOTH OXIDIZE AND FORM A WHITE CHALKY COAT LIKE YOUR EXAMPLE'S HANDLE APPEARS TO HAVE. IT SHOULD CLEAN UP NICELY WITH JUST A LIGHT CLEANING AND OILING OR WAXING UP. THE BLADE , HANDLE AND SCABBARD MAY HAVE BEEN REPLACED OVER THE LIFE OF THE MANDAU OR ALL ORIGINAL. ON THIS PARTICULAR SWORD I WOULD GUESS ALL THE WORK WAS DONE BY THE DAYAK OWNER AND NOT JUST FIXED UP TO SELL. I LIKE THESE OLD ORIGINAL ITEMS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN TAMPERED WITH OUTSIDE OF THE CULTURE THAT CREATED THEM. :)

Hi Vandoo
Thank you for your comment.
I prefer to let it as it is, in original condition may be only wax for the blade and nothing more.

Willen wrote me that that this type has been published on this forum before.this madau has a very old scabbard version from Kutei
and also an undecorated blade which are characteristics of Kutei mandau.

Very Nice old Mandau..

Was going to suggest the same as Willem and Ben...

BTW, what do you Borneo enthusiasts recommend for nurturing the dried out stag hilt? I'd be tempted to try some oil or at least microcrystalline wax rather than keeping it dried out as it is.

Regards,
Kai

I would put some wax on the hilt myself.
Probably also on the wood. just a bit.

Best regards,
Willem

I would only clean the blade.
