Today I win this small dagger by epray, I think it is a Rawit from Batak people.
Here the e-bay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWNX:IT
And the pictures for the future. Comments are welcome.

Detlef

Yup, a rawit!

Congrats, Detlef, nice bargain!

Difficult to estimate the age from the pics: possibly not antique - IMHO a genuine, well carved example though.

Kai

Thank you Kai,

I have had as well my doubts but like you write it's difficult to say by the pics and sheath & handle are carved from horn which make it more difficult to see the age.

Detlef

I was looking at this but the age is questionable? The carving is quite fresh looking and the blades quality does seem a bit off to me

Hello Lew,

like I write before, I have my doubts too. Will ask the seller if he know something about the history and hope to tell more when I hold it in my hands.

Detlef

We talked about a similar piece, quite some time ago.

Similar  try : almost identical :D ;)

Difficult to guess age, Detlefs example is maybe unused and very well preserved. If it is recent, I would be amazed by the quality carving.
I vote for well preserved.
The blades of batak weapons are often simple unlayered. This blade does not give me the idea of being newly made.

Best regards,
Willem

Hello Freddy,

this one and the one Colin show us in this thread: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ighlight=rawit, let me look for one. And Willem is correct, they look very similar. :) :)

Detlef

Hi Willem,

you give me hope! :D The nice carving on my one let me think or hope that it is a genuine rawit.

I don't think so, your one was missing some bands, the colour of the horn was different and so far I can see was the handle not splitted.

Detlef
