My second Kamp

Hi all!! I know you have seen a plethora of these, but it's my second one and I'm really happy with it: nice blade lamination, nice carvings, nice patination of the wood, iron guard... :) I'd like to restore the hilt rattan wrapping so any suggestion is welcome!! I already find the old treads to how weave rattan.
Especially I'd like to know the width of the rattan I need. Attached are also a couple of pictures of Rick's kampilan, I'd like to do something like that.
Thank you an HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! :)

Flavio

Very nice my friend but I feel of late you are straying too far from your African path ;).

Felice Anno Nuovo!

Hi Flavio,

Congrats, I like this one very much. Nice old patin on the hilt and especially I like the carvings at the bottomside of the handguard. Also the blade shows great lamination.
When you consider wrap the hilt again with ratan, please don't use the "natural" light coloured ratan.

Sweet and super! Congrats, Flavio! :)

PS - I'd swear I'd seen 'er in some korner or edge of the Web before ;) Or maybe it was just my imagination! :D

Flavio 1st January 2009 10:57 AM

Thank you dear friends!!!

Hola Miguel!! yes, you're right it comes from Erik ;)

Maurice, I will stain rattan for sure, I don't like the natural color, I will try to give a "lived" look at the rattan... or at least I will try :p

Thank you Rick, you are very kind :) Can you give me the width of the rattan? the one used for the handle and the other crossing over the first one (yellow color)? Thank you so much!

Dear Lew.... yes I'm too far from Africa, but I will try to find some african pieces in the next future! :D

Rick 1st January 2009 03:37 PM

Hi Flavio, here are the widths of the rattan strips .
I hope you don't mind doing the conversions from inches to mm . :o

The three bands on the handle are 1/32 of an inch wide strips; they are plaited double strands to make the bands .
The outer wrap is of rattan a bit wider than 1/16 of an inch .

As I say, if you'd like 360 degree shots of the overweave etc. I'll be glad to provide .

That is an old hilt with a beautiful patina from long use .
Good score !!

Have you thought about staining the rattan with either strong coffee or tea ?

Flavio 1st January 2009 05:28 PM

Hi Rick, thank you so much!! Yes if you can I really appreciate 360 degree shots, thanks again and yes I was thinking of staining the rattan with a mixture of coffee and tea. Than I will pass on the rattan something like shirluk to protect and to make shiny the rattan.

Grazie Rick :)

Rick 1st January 2009 06:53 PM

Gracias for the comment, Flavio! That's what I thought ;)

By the way, I'm also buying a kampilan from Erik. I'm sure I will have as much fun when I receive it.

Happy weaving with those rattan! :)

Hi, very nice piece. Sorry for my ignorance, what are made of those loops on the guard and "pommel"? Which is their use? I can gess, but I prefer to have certain information. Thank you for your attention.
Regards

Gonzalo

Flavio 2nd January 2009 03:03 PM

Hi Gonzalo, if you mean the "loops" at the side of the wood guard it's just a bar of iron bended to be an additional guard. I don't remember where but I see also pictures of kampilans that show on both sides iron guards (maybe one of these kamps is in the collection of one of our members)

Gonzalo G 3rd January 2009 09:45 AM

Hi Flavio, thank you very much for the data. You are righ, the loops are only on the guard, I made a mistake. Interesting construction. I am not familiar with this weapons, though I like them. I hope you enjoy this nice finding.
Regards

Gonzalo

Well... it is not finished yet, a long way to go....this is just an updating... :)

Spunjer 11th January 2009 02:50 PM

now all you need is a brown kiwi shoe polish to get that honey patina on the rattan...

nice job. did you do the braiding?

Lew 11th January 2009 04:05 PM

Great work my friend. I wish I had the skill to this type of stuff. :(

Lew

Rick 11th January 2009 04:15 PM

Nice Flavio .
Are you going to carry on with the over wrap, or just leave it as it is ? :)

Flavio 11th January 2009 05:34 PM

Thank you all dear friends :)

Spunjer, great idea!! The colour is more dark than you can see from pics but I'll try some dark shoe polish!!

Rick, yes I think to do also the over wrapping in the next days and something more.... ;)

Lew, if you have something to send me (and I know you have!!!!) here I am :) :D

Ah! Spunjer, I have done the braiding ;)

Ok, I think it is finished, but I'd like to know from you what do you think on this: maybe I have gone over the restauration... I have added also an old (more than 100 years old) piece of rope, maybe it is better to remove it? what's your idea? and about the over wrapping? it's better the first version with a more simple wrapping? Sorry for the dark pics and the others with flash on, but here is already night... :p

Tim Simmons 13th January 2009 07:11 PM

I have a few jobs like that for you to do at my home. very

Rick 13th January 2009 08:55 PM

Bravo !!

Flavio 13th January 2009 11:11 PM

Thank you Tim and Rick! So do you think that is not "too much restored"? something like a "fake"..... How much far one can go with the restoration?

Rick 13th January 2009 11:18 PM

IMO it's fine; I'd even darken up the overwrap a bit .
Are you having second thoughts ?

Flavio 13th January 2009 11:28 PM

Hi Rick,

I was thinking that maybe I have esagerated when I have added also the red rope... You know that if you believe that the rope is like an amulet, well in this case is really a non-sense to put the rope, but I have done this because another explanation, as Cato says, is that this pieces of rope were used also to assure a better grip...
About the overwrap is just a bit clearer than the wrap under, just the flash do not show the real color
