German Fighting Knife/Bayonet?

4 Attachment(s)
Hi all,
I bought this from a sales table at a militaria show; described as a WW1 German fighting knife. A previous owner has polished the brasswork to a brilliant finish. Can anyone identify this for me?
Thanks in anticipation,
Brian

Hi Brian
Calling it a bayonet would indeed be more adequate.
WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM are a famous German sword maker.
Others will tell you the exact model; but i am under the impression that this blade was shortened ... this way becoming more like a fighting knife

Looks like it started out as a Yataghan bladed sword bayonet and was cut down. It looks like a peabody bayonet now.

Actually this is an official conversion, done at the early 1900's by the Argentine army, to fit its Engineers carbine. The peculiar small half-moon ring is to accomodate the cleaning rod. It has a matching issue cut-down iron scabbard. WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM were official suppliers of edge weapons to several South America countries.
I had one (with the scabbard) in my collection years ago, when I was into bayonets.
Check Homer Brett's The Military Knife & Bayonet p.45.
