Visayan Bolo in Auctions Imperial

The 2012 Auctions Imperial sale was the second time they offered a "Visayan Bolo". A similar one was offered in 2010.

Based on nearly identical samples in Spain, I believe it was made in Binan, Laguna, in the late 1800's. Several specimens were exhibited in the 1887 Philippine Exposition in Madrid. They bore the markings "1887" and "Binan, Laguna".

Laguna is a province in Southern Luzon.

I was going to say that this was actually a Luzon piece. Very nice and expensive. Thanks for posting this Nacho.

These are both beautiful bolos but I prefer the one that just sold at AI. I have been watching this thread in hopes that someone from the forum was the lucky winner and would post more photos.

I have a similar one (the bolsters are quite different) but I did't know it was Visayan.

It's not; it's Luzon (unless you are joking.......).
