PI Shield -- Kalasag?
 

Just finished on eBay. I wonder if it could be a Kalasag?

Had to run out and do some work. (Gotta make some money to support my addiction to Ethnographic weapons.)

Want to add some ideas about this shield. Let me say from the get go that I am not familiar with this exact type of shield.

This is just guessing until I get it in my hands, but I would not think this is really old, maybe fifty years at most, but it has a lot of work put into it, so it doesn't seem to have been made "for people who travel the world for fun."

Maybe made by indigenous people, possibly for re-enactments, dance, or silat.

I am curious if it is even the right kind of wood. Looks denser, not like the very light woods that many of the older shields were made from, because they were used to deflect blows and not fortifications to hide behind.

I just like the way it looks. Will give more information when I get it, and better pictures.

Would appreciate some comments from people who might be familiar with this kind of shield. Or just thoughts and reflections.....

Bill: There isn't much doubt in my mind that is Ifagao, though which group i don't have a clue. It definitely is a variation on the normal form that is seen.............Dave.

I'd guess Mindanao. Simular to the Bagobo.

Certainly from Southern Philippines (e.g. Mindanao). My guess is Bagobo. I hope this helps.

What do you think about the origin? Tourist or something else?

I realize it is not a usual form. The pictures also indicate it is slightly rounded on the middle front and flat on the back.

The seller says it is carved from one piece of wood excepting the two small strips on the back.

THE LAST TWO ARE WHAT ONE USUALLY SEES BUT I AM SURE THERE WERE VARIATIONS IN VARIOUS GROUPS FROM THE SAME TRIBE AS WELL AS DUE TO DIFFERENT MAKERS ,OWNERS REQUESTS AND TIME PERIODS. THE HANDLE USUALLY TELLS THE TALE IF IT SHOWS NATURAL WEAR FROM USE AND DIFFERENCES IN PATINA IT USUALLY MEANS IT HAS BEEN USED. THE USE MAY HAVE BEEN ONLY FOR CEREMONY OR EVEN FOR SHOWBIZ, BUT IF IT IS NATIVE MADE AND USED IT IS STILL FULFILLING A ETHINOGRAPHIC ROLE NO MATTER THE AGE OR USE. THE WORKMANSHIP LOOKS TO BE VERY GOOD AND IT IS AN ATTRACTIVE SHIELD REGARDLESS I SURE WOULD NOT TURN IT DOWN FOR MY COLLECTION. :D CONGRAT'S ENJOY!

Bill: After studying the pictures again i think the other forumites could be right. It could be Bagobo or even Moro. It was the top of the shield that made me think Ifagao. This seems to me to be one of those variations as Vandoo has stated that could fall into either North or South Phillipines. Lonna an I are just fine.....getting ready to do the Militaria Show at L.A. County fairgrounds next week...........Dave.

Bill, I'm for a Bagobo origin, but not sure it is not a mid-20th century piece. I like the other 2. If you are going to throw those other 2 in the trash, please let me know. :D

The taller thinner one of the two was a gift to General Robert Lee Bullard, the fighting general under General "Black Jack" Pershing. Got it from his great grandson Brian Bullard.
