Hello everybody,
I wish you an happy new year 2019 !!!

I bought this small sword , I think it's indonesian ( a parang ?)
nice carved ( horn?) hilt, small silver mounts.

The blade is interesting,
I wonder if it is an european blade adapted to make an asian style or a local production ? ( for Dutch colons ???)

The blade cuts on one side ( sabre ) but on both sides at the top of the blade.

Sorry, some global pictures are not really good

Kind regards

Francky

Hello Francky,

This is usually referred to as pedang (fairly generic and widespread name for "sword"). Do a search here for more examples!

This piece seems to originate from Lombok. I'd guess that the blade got forged locally: they are usually laminated and often have fullers.

Kai

P.S.: The pad of leather got probably added by a western dealer.

Hello Kai,
really Thank you !!
Sorry for my late answer to your message,
I wasn't in town for a few days.
I didn't know indonesian forged this kind of blade
( already saw Tjikeroeh blades looking like hunting european knifes...)

Kind regards

Hello Francky,

No worries - you're welcome!

The Tjikeroeh blades are indeed strongly influenced by the strong colonial presence.

The pedang blades seem to be mainly indigenous though.

Regards,
Kai

a subtype of swords from Lombok Island
