View Full Version : Random objects pressed into service to display your weapons!!

Hi all,

Bills thread from a couple of weeks ago about his WW1 Howitzer shell/umberella stand and how it found a second-life as a Spear holder, made me wonder how many other objects we all are using to display our collected weapons which were meant for other uses?

Come on chaps! Mother of invention and all!

Improvised stands, caes, displays, racks?
What are you all using?

Bit of fun and might give us some good ideas!

In my case to build my racks I use 1x2 pine strips with holes drilled every inch down the center and L-hooks to rest the blades or grips on. Not very fancy but it works for me. :D Here is a picture of one of them.

Bloody hell Robert!
Add some close-ups of that swept hilt Rapier, I need to see the 'mounting system' more clearly! ;)

P.S. and whats the third one down from the top?
Looks rather interesting!

Hello, Thank you for your interest. I will try to get some decent pictures taken of the first sword you ask about tomorrow. It has a strange story as the old woman that I bought it from (who was in her 80s at the time) told me that it and another sword, a kris had been brought back from the Philippines by her Uncle. When I bought it it was covered in layer after layer of silver paint. I missed getting the kris. The third sword down is also from the Philippines, Spanish American War era, probably Luzon. There is more about it including pictures here. http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1909

...while baking some cookies one day, i had this vision (no, i wasn't making organic cookies :D).
so off to walmart i went, and bought a DIY armoire and some red materials. then to lowe's, where i picked up some 3/4" boards and rollers.
after a week with pieces strewn all over the place, and wifey giving me those dagger looks, my oven inspired weapon cabinet was finally done! now, all i gotta do is open the doors and my babies are right there. just slide the board out.

Hello Robert. Great collection. The naval cutlass, last sword above the daggers. Did you buy that from me on ebay? looks very familiar. I really didn't want to sell that one but... You have stay within your perameters. Awsome sword. M.P.

I needed a sword rack for a display, and didn't have to time to get creative. Went to the flea market I have a booth in, and found a wooden TV tray stand. Added pegs on the uprights, and used a bamboo place mat, across the tray holder for a shelf. Voila! Swords on the uprights, and daggers and smalls on the shelf. I also found a wooded what-not shelf. You know the kind, one board across two design cut wood supports. Available at Wally World, or any craft, or home improvement store. Turn upside down, and add hooks. Displays two or three swords, similar to a Samurai sword stand. Also, look for bamboo, or reed placemats, or roll-up blinds. They make a great back ground, or mat for display use. M.P.

Trenchwarfare, I really cannot remember who I bought the bolo from. It came in a lot of four that I won on ebay. If you are the one who sold them to me thank you very much as I really enjoy them. Here is where they were posted before. http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=3425

Spunjer, What a great idea for a display case, open when needed and closed when not. My bet is it holds dusting down to a minimum, something that racks like I have require alot of.

Robert. My sword was sold as a single. Identicle though. Buyer said that it was a Spanish American War Naval cutlass, for Philippine sailors in Spanish service. M.P.

Excellent ideas gentlemen! Good reuse Trenchwarfare!

Love the collections Spunjer, Great way to keep them safe and still easy to see!

I had problems displaying helmets and finding stands that weren't too huge to fit on a shelf.
For a while I was using this 19thC Nepalese Oil Lamp to display a Khud with long chainmail:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c59/Battlestar_Atlantia/IM000183.jpg

Seems a shame for such a nice object, but it still gets pressed into service for helmets that are a bit large or long or very heavy.

But I wanted a permenant solution that would be good for most helmets and be cheap and simple.

Here it is!

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c59/Battlestar_Atlantia/IM000178.jpg

What am I using?

LOL, Kitchen tissue towel holder! Wooden and available for about a pound or two from many outlets.

I have a valve from a V-24 Off-shore deisel, I use for a helmet stand. Stainless steel, 12" tall, with a 6" base. Weighs about 5lbs.

Atlantia, I posted the pictures of the Rapier in the European Armoury forum hoping to get more information on it than I have now, which is little to none. If you wouldn't mind please take a look at it there and if you would like I can even post close-ups of the 'mounting system'. :D Thank you for your interest and thanks to all the others for sharing their ideas and wonderful displays with the rest of us in this great thread.

Most of my stuff is hung via rare earth magnets and small picture hooks with blued hardened steel nails and a bit of blued steel wire. The bottom photo I used a walking stick holder for some of my spears and clubs.

Thank you everone who has let me into their house and collections for a virtual tour.
As I am undergoing major renovations over the next 12 months I won't have much to share on the display front but I will be sure to mark this thread for future postings as I do have a couple of nice displays in my mind for when all is complete here....here is hoping the renos don't drain the finances and keep me from obtianing other stuff too.

Hi Atlantia

I found it on ebay it was custom made for me.

They look great, I'm always torn as to if I want clear perspex so as to get the best 'view' of the item, or dark wood to have a more 'antique' look.
I think that as you've done, a mixture looks best! :)

What a great idea!!!!
I've seen similar flat pack pale wood racks, would never have thought of using the gaps between the planks for the blades!
Great collection BTW!

Hello,

I used to have items hanging all over the house. A recent Hallmark store closing allowed me to nab a 70 cubic foot tempered glass showcase cheap!--porcelein dolls now replaced by blades.

Also picked up a nice acrylic stand--not sure of its previous use but holds 6 tulwars nicely.
