Another gunong to share

[Ferguson]

My most recent addition to the collection. Blade is heavy, laminated and very hard. The top and bottom pieces of the scabbard are silver. The middle section seems to have been added at a later date and is nickel silver. The wood of the hilt is not as red as it seems in some of the pictures, and is very nice banati. Thanks for looking, and comments are always welcomed.

I have always enjoyed that particular blade shape in gunong. Nice lamination!

Now this is the nicest truly antique gunong I have seen in a long time. A real and high ranking puppy. A great piece - I'd say the best one you have - can't figure out how I missed it! :confused:

And I believe it is Maranao. In fact the middle was made by the same same artisan who made the scabbard of my gunong (or at least the exact same motif design). :D In fact, the top and bottom are also identical to my scabbard as well as the guard! :eek:

Thank you all for your kind comments. They make me like the piece even more. :) The blade really is sweet. The laminations are tight and the blade is sharp and very hard. It also has those sparkly crystals in it. They show up in the photos as white spots near the center of the blade.

I thought it was interesting that the scabbard had been modified from the original. At least, that's what I'm thinking from the different metals.

Acutally I don't think it was altered. The top and bottom parts are low silver with the tarnish taken off.

Well that's cool. :) The reason I thought the center piece may have been added, is that it's a different metal, has different type joints where soldered (I think), and the okir work looked different. But that's why I posted it here to get your opinion Jose. You're the man when it comes to silver work and okir!

I'm honored, thank you Steve. I do think you are right in that the middle part may be nickel silver - not unusual (just polish it up :D)
