I wonder if anyone might know the significance of this blade inscription - it appears to be etched.
Many thanks.

Hi Stephen,
I believe it is the Kishanghar armoury mark from Rajasthan. Check out this thread.

Hi Stephen,
Jeff gave you the answer. The mark on your tulwar is medium deep, although not all the letters are shown.
Hi Jeff,
Nice to see that you responded so quickly :).

...many thanks for your replies...
...here's another marking - not etched this time - on a large tulwar (40")
An armoury marking or something else?

Stephen,
I think the inscription should be turned, but I am not sure, and I can't read it, although the sign in the middle of the top line looks like number '4'.

...thanks, do you recognize the script/language? Also I notice that the blade has been pierced - evidence of an earlier hilt with blade supports maybe. Is the blade Indian or foreign, do you think?

On closer examination it's a stamp, identical on both sides of the blade which is very light and flexible - quite similar to a 1796 Light Cavalry sabre in some respects.

better I dunno ;)
but it's easy, any way ... Ward did half of the job :p
first line from right to left
- Allah
- a sign that "Jens Nordlunde" took as number 4 .. but it's just like "&"
- Muhammad
the repetition of 3 design are just ...... nothing ( sorry Ward :o )
