I have a 18-century karud from Bokhara with a rhino horn hilt.

Is there a way to take care of/ preserve rhino horn?

Thanks in advance for your info.

I use a couple of drops of mineral oil. A very thin coat will do.

I fed my karud's rhino scales with lanolin .
Smeared it on and let it absorb overnight; cleaned the excess off the next day ; that was 2 years ago .

I heat the house with a wood stove and the scales are just fine . :)

Hi Rick, I wonder if the lanolin would be good for buffalo horn handles too?

Yes it is. You can use lanolin alone, or mix it with a bit of mineral oil.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply! I've got a few older horn handles that are really dry. I've been using ren wax on them but it does not seem to do much as far as keeping them from drying out more. :( I will try the lanolin and oil and see what happens. Thanks again.

I have heard of lanolin in hand creams, and of course am aware of mineral oil, but is lanolin available as just a pure oil or cream by itself??...and if so where and by what name or brand?? Thanks for any help.

i got a tube of pure lanolin from the pharmacist at the local boots (chemist/drug store). by product of wool production, it's a very thick yellowish white grease with the consistency of vaseline.

Charles, try your local health food store for pure lanolin .

PURE LANOLIN IS OK BUT YOU DON'T WANT THE NATURAL STUFF AS IT WILL MAKE YOUR COLLECTION SMELL LIKE A HERD OF SHEEP :D
