decoration on sumatra/aceh/atjeh ladieng + cojang

I recently bought a cojang / Co-jang with a decoration on the back that is 'almost' identical to a Ladieng that was already in my collection.

Is this a big coincidence or is it a rather common decoration ?
I would like to see some more aceh/sumatra weapons with these decorations but most books only show small pictures and no details.

Nice swords! I would say that these are a common decoration foun on these swords. I really do like the matching cracks on the hilts ;) Funny I two Sikin swords with identical cracks in the hilt I have yet to see one that doesn't have one. :shrug:

I also remember a similair decoration on a lopah petawaran I owned.

Slowly the collection extends, but the variation in these spine decorations comes close to zero. :) I still do like them a lot :D
The last addition has a suasa collar and horn hilt: hulu cangge gliwang.

No, I don't have better pictures of the pattern on the Ladieng.
To get real good pictures I would probably have to clean and etch it, but I like the overal appearance at this moment.

Here is a picture with the balde forms and hulu / hilt forms.
The most left one on the hilt picture is probably an early form of hulu cangge gliwang.

I am most impressed by their beauty, that is a very nice grouping with an understated beauty and quality rather than the drippings of gold and ivory seen on other Sumatran weapons...Not that ivory and gold is a bad thing :D .
I must say since obtaining the Kelling Hall collection I too have the Sumatran bug and will one day start another grouping of these weapons after I fill wants from other cultures first, thanks for sharing.

The markings are interesting and quite rubbed so I am guessing there is some good age to that example I have. I do not know the basis of those blade side markings but they are, although a little more rigid by design, similar to those found on my Sadap. I have seen similar on another Borneo piece too but I guess there was a lot of similar cultural cross overs in times past.
And yes, Willems and your Ladieng would look great together...I doubt he'd break the set though ;-)

Absolutely true....therefore I think these decorations are very interesting.
These decorations could be occurring more often on amanremu's, but I handled to less to tell.
Maybe somebody else on the forum had seen these kind of decorations at the side of the blade on Sumatran pieces??

In the Fischer Catalogue of the Leiden Atjeh collection there is also a drawing of an identical type of decoration that is found on several items in that collection. Will try to make a picture later.
