Gentlemen ,

If you get this PM please be careful !
Sounds suspicious !!
Please don't open the link .
Safety first; right?

Rick

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry for PMing out of the blue. Here's the thing.

I wrote a book with a friend of mine. My husband keeps saying it sucks. I think he's just jealous tho.

He spends a lot of time on these boards, so I told him I'm going to pick a random person here, and ask them, and we ended up betting on it.

So go to - and make the call. Does it suck?

Thanks

Hi Rick,

This is some new form of spam that's been hitting fora. It seems vbulletin was hacked and all their users are affected. Thanks for the heads-up!

New private message:

Erin Pavlina Hey there.

Not being acquainted with the sender, I deleted the message without opening. I assume this is the offending party.

Best regards,

Thanks also to Rick and Andrew.

My first thought, when I read the post from Erin, was "Well aren't I special? This exotic foreign woman has asked for my kind assistance, knowing the caliber of fine posts I have contributed to this illustrious Forum! She is asking for a sparkling review to thwart her husband's negative comments."

My second thought was that this "request from Erin" did not pass the "nose test", i.e. something smells here.

So I decided to forward it to Andrew and Rick. Their response was that it was spam and delete it.

I did open the link. It leads to a really boring e-book. :(

Reluctantly, as a result of this spam attack, I have disabled the ability for new registrants to send PMs until they have been taken out of probationary status.

Unfortunately, this will likely be inconvenient for the lurker who wishs to contact a posting member (for example, to inquire about an item in the swap forum).

The probationary status (placing new registrant's posts in a queue that has to be cleared before the post becomes visible) itself was implemented as a result of spam postings. Members are removed from this status by the moderators as their motivations become more clear.

If a lurker-member really wants the PM functions and has registered but not posted since this probationary status was instated, he or she still has the option of sending me an e-mail identifying himself or herself and discussing his or her ethnographic arms interests sufficiently to allow me to differentiate him or her from a spammer.

P.S. - Don't make your subject 'Hey there' if you want it to get read

Hi Rick,

You might want to remove the link in your original post. Lets not help them in anyway :) .
