Ward,
What a treat to see your square barrel matchlock. Interesting how the pattern on the top difffers from the side, the top looking like opposed circles and the side looking somewhat like a chevron.
Always liked the high contrast that pattern welded barrels have. How about the side plates? Are they watered too?
The stylized lion(?) on the tip of the barrel is very nice too..

That is interesting. I have seen both of the patterns on the barrel on Tibetan weapons including a matchlock. I don't know about formal names for the patters, but the chevron design on this barrel is not made in the usual double row of twist core. It is made with rod(s) bent into a continuous herringbone pattern. Here is an example from a Tibetan dagger (http://s77.photobucket.com/albums/j65/pekhopai/?action=view¤t=9f614c7d.jpg).
Is this style of pattern welding along with the "jelly role" pattern usual on Indian weapons, or would this be evidence of Tibetan techniques?

Hey Ward,
Was reading a post made by Lee and he attched a file called "Fun with Fumo", check out the 40-50% patterns, thought it was similar pattern to the design on your square barreled matched.
Love that piece!!
