Just found this small shield (24 cm/9,6 inches) on the antique market. I don't know anything about it. Has anyone any ideas ? :confused:

There are some small holes near the rim. A repair has been made (see last pic).

Hi Freddy.The lines on convex surface look as if it has been spun to shape{spinning}I do not know the history of this technique.To me it does not look Indo/Persian.I do not think I helped that much.Tim

I'll chime in on agreement with Aceh being a leading contender although brass bucklers, from what I've been able to determine, were widespread and valued throughout the Philippine and Malay archipelagos....how many different tribes actually made them I don't know, but I've seen them attributed to well over a dozen different tribes and regions, with some "spun", some sand cast and others made through the lost wax method yet all surprisingly similar in size and appearance even into Persia, India and SE Asia.
Normally there would be a cusion or pillow, often leather on battle pieces, with the back sometimes covered in fabric glued on with an animal/dairy glue and two straps, usually leather or chain, running from the rings for a secure grip.
It's hard to tell if the repair was from a manufacturing flaw or if it was repaired battle damage, such as a sword or axe cut, possibly even a bullet hole.
SWEET aquisition.

ps....I've even seen similar attributed to Benin in Africa, although this one looks very much like Acehan or nearby.

Mike, you are right !

I looked in the book 'Traditional Weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago' and found an almost identical shield. As far as I can see, the decoration is the same. Even the diameter is almost identical.
