Hi John,
I can't really offer much of any input on these but I do have a question.
Regarding the hulu meu apet ; is the pommel cup always supposed to have a cover ?
My example is lacking one and I wonder if it may have had one in the past.

Hi John,
Here you are on Hulu Iku Mie version 2.
AFAIK both of them aren't "genuine Aceh", even if they are found in the region.

Rick,
My belief is that all of them originally had the "cover" on the cap. Some books call this pommel "duan tebu" to represent the sprouting sugar cane leaf. Most of them I have handled ( and this is relatively few only about a dozen) have lost the "cover" with time. It should be noted the higher quality ones have a much thicker "cover" often highly decorated I will post pics of it when I get home tomorrow night

Thanks for this input. I know that Von Zonneveld lists Hulu Ike Mie as an Aceh term with Hulu Simbol being the Gayo term for the same hilt. Barbara Leigh in "Hands of Time" Talks about a hilt like the tail of a cat. I have been told that this style represents the curved tail of a cat. That of course does not mean that this hilt should not be attributed elsewhere and it migrated to Aceh where they described it so. Any idea's what the proper attribution for this hilt is ?

The version 1, with floral top and heavy klewang blade, probably originated in Palembang.
The version 2, that I sent a picture of, probably originated among the Batak.

Here is another hilt found in Aceh - the duck tail or hulu iku ite.
In the Leiden catalogues the resembling klewang anyway were collected in that area.

I had read about this style hilt in articles by Barbara Leigh but I had never seen one before. This is great thanks. Can I use these pictures ?
