This knife is a Papal assassins knife. The Papal death priests carry them to protect themselves from the Devil and other heretics. They are derived from the Spanish inquisition.

That blade looks plenty serious...the handle is a bit toy-like though.

Tim Simmons

The blade is very serious. The chap selling it said it was taken from an Italian officer in ww2 :D :D :D He was one of the death priests I imagine, that became an officer in the army?

Looks like some kind of antique souvenir of Venice.

Why do you say that Rick?

Rick

Isn't the handle the winged lion of St. Mark a Venice landmark ?
Why yes it is !

Yes it is Rick, but it is well known the the papal death priests were established in Venice as there was a special hard line order. The order of st Mark. Look very closely at the cross it is not an ordinary cross. The cross piece is in the middle making it quite different.

Pardon my ignorance Tim; never heard of 'em.
Got any sources ?

Tim Simmons

Rick the people who collect these things know that these people have always been a death squad since the late crusades. In my opinion you have shown no evidence to counter my original claim.

Out of my realm of knowledge Tim; not countering your claim; just giving an opinion from observation of the object .

This guy is one of them and I am his head boy.

You mean there are no experts on early brass handled Papal-assassin figural daggers in this forum with other examples of winged lions to support your identification? How disappointing.

Tim ,
I noticed that the Papal Assassin's Dagger is without a scabbard...
..apparently they were too cumbersome and impractical....and were often discarded......I found an image that may explain why.... :D :D ;)

Hmmm, now I lost. Does this picture suggest the scabbard would be in shape of CHURCH DIRECTED in PROPER WAY .... or does it prove it is impossible to make scabbard with the picture of the church in that way!

(aren't we going too far?)

Now is that figure at the top of the hilt the Lion of St Mark? Or could it be the Lion from the Wizard of Oz? ;)

Heres a real one Tim, not like you poor imitation! with a rare walrus handle in the figure shape of a chattanogatsssa canoe. {the people are lyeing down in it as the boats been upturned in the whitewater rapids so you cant see them though. ;) } although it does resemble an Afghan cavalry sabre in certan light. :D

Study & learn....

I think we’ve lost it here folks, there no need for a cowardly attack on the lion.

It’s time for lunch. I think I will have chicken. So, I am off to see the gizzard….

Okay, I can live with the parody, teasing and good-natured "ribbing". However, if you guys start slinging bad puns around, I will lock this thread down! :D
