Here's something I've come into possession of. Based on my dilettante research, this looks to be a Polish saber from 17th-19th century. I'd like to know what it is exactly. I'm not a collector so ultimately this item should reach someone who is. What would be its value? How would I go about offering it for sale? How can I get it appraised?

It's an Ethiopian sword circa 1890. Check the thread ETHIOPIAN, ANYONE? for more answers. You may contact me at ROANOA@SHAW.CA for other details. RON

gman:

Welcome to the Forum.

This sword is likely Ethiopian. There is an excellent current thread here that describes these swords:

We don't provide appraisals on the Forum, but you might PM or email one of the members who specializes in these swords and ask them off line for an appraisal.

Ian.

Edit: I see Ron beat me to it! ;)

To add a bit more information, that lion is the crest of the Ethiopian emperors, who bear the title of "Conquering Lion of Judah," among other titles. The Imperial house traces its roots back to the son of King Solomon of Israel and Queen Makeda of Sheba, who was named Menelik. They are refered to as the "Solomonic Dynasty" for this reason.

I can't tell if the crown on the other side of the blade has a head under it, but the crown is recognizably that of the Ethiopian emperors, as well: http://www.angelfire.com/ny/ethiocrown/Haile.html
