Hi folks,
*New member here. After being pointed to this forum by Ric Furrer a while back, I'm finally dropping by with a specific question. It's possible that I'll be on Borneo for a good part of 2007 for work, and would like to be familliar with some of the traditional weapons of the area since I may have the time to appreciate them. Where would be a good place to start to become more familliar with all of these beautiful, but unfamilliar blades?
Thanks,
-d

Welcome to the Forum!
Greetings is all I can offer; but I am sure there will be plenty of Forumites wishing to give you plenty of practical info, personal preferences and recommendations for books and articles in obscure publications :)
Enjoy!.

Welcome deker.
Good to hear from you. How fortunate to travel to Borneo.
There is a wealth of information available by searching this forum (click on "search" button above) and the former forum (go to the EAA home page and click on "UBB Forum 2000-2004">"Ethnographic Edged Weapons">"Search"). A search on these fora for "Dayak" or "Borneo" will be useful for you.
Because much of Borneo is Kalimantan (part of Indonesia), the following thread which talks about references for Indonesian weapons would be relevant too:

The book by von Zonneveld has illustrations of many weapons from Borneo. This will get you started and the other references cited in the link above will add to that.
Good luck you lucky dog.
Ian.

My father bought a Dayak sword in Brunei in 1968. He still has it hanging on the wall. In pefect conditon, in fact he chased a burgular with it once (not a good thing to do in England). :D
