I bought this recently at auction thinking it would make a good wall hanging with a couple of swords. It was advertised as Victorian and I've no reason to doubt that, although my knowledge of historism items is minimal.
I am impressed by the feel of authenticity and it seems fully functional. There are thick leather straps on the back and it is 20" in diameter.

The leather has an embossed pattern on the front and the spike unscrews. The leather on the back is much dried out and in poorer condition.

Any thoughts? And how do I protect the leather from further deterioration.

Nice one, probably one of those "Walter Scott" era pieces and non the worse for that.

The victorian formula would be 60% neatsfoot oil, 40% lanoline in weight. I add cedar essence as insecticide/antifungi.

Melt in double boiler (bain Marie) the lanoline, then add the neatsfoot oil.
