hi,
i just got my catalogue (large, well written book) for the seville exhibition related to art of the period of Ibn Khaldun (14thC).
the exhibition looks fantastic, and was wondering if anyone had managed to see it (still on till september)??
marc?
there are pieces borrowed from all over, inc madrid and a collection i know in london.
really important pieces and a well planned exhibition of andalusian and nasrid art (with arms of course).
i hope to get there before its over, but running out of time (as always).
would love a first hand opinion.

How can I get a copy of this catalogue?
Can you check with the museum ?
I am sure there will be more takers.

hey ariel,
a friend has some pieces in the exhibition, and was sent two copies, which was how i got mine.
isbn 84-96556-35-2
84-96395-22-7
be warned that there are only a very small handful of arms in the exhibition. but, for anyone interested in the period or the direct crossover of islamic and christian art, its a must. its big, well written and wel illustrated.
maybe marc can source a suppy?

Many thanks.
Can you specify how much "weapon-related" stuff was there and what kind of weapons were reviewed?

They do have one very interesting piece, the helmet of Sultan Muhammad ibn Qalawun, one the earliest surving Mamluk helmets. An item I have previously seen only in poor quality black and white photos. I would buy the catalogue for that alone if there are good quality colour pics of it in there.

sorry, ariel, i was bookless over the weekend.
there are only a small amount of weapons, but all of which are important given the period. the catalogue is more for those into the period and the art/history of the christian/islamic crossover.
there is -

loshult cannon
combat helmet (fragment)
nasrid ear dagger
boabdils sword
hand cannon
ribaudequin
leg guard
nasrid crossbow
standard
ibn qalawuns helmet.

thats it i think. it is well written and in depth and worth buying as the period is so fascinating.

Thanks B.I. I think I'm going to buy this book. :)

Is the mail Aventail on the helmet original? Muhammad Ibn Qalawun died around 1341 AD, and yet that aventail is strikingly similar to "Indo-Persian" mail aventails on 17th-18th century "kulah khud" style helmets.

Is it just me, or has anyone else found that the "Virtual Shop" on the Ibn Khaldun website isn't working. I tried ordering the catalogue from the other website, unfortunately I don't know Spanish, so I didn't get very far.
