Way out of my collecting theme but I rather liked it so it came home with me.
I believe that it is a Chinese Rice Container. Stands 60cm tall and is made of laquered paper mache, and bound with bamboo/rattan.
Can someone please confirm my thinking, and also if possible please translate the script?
May thanks in advance (Sorry the pics are not upright!)

I am getting a Japanese vibe from this.

Hi David, I'm almost 100% sure that the script is Chinese so if someone can translate then that should confirm origin.

Pre 1945 there was very little difference between the two, if any, and the use of lacquered paper-mache is a very Japanese thing. A nice item to have in either case.

It's Chinese indeed.
You will probably laugh at me, but it most likely says "long winding road".

Just an observation but this container doesn't look particularly rodent proof, which I find interesting.
It was surely not made for long term storage; or was it?

Hi Rick,
Point taken, but I understand that these were used for storage within the house rather than a storehouse. As has been mentioned by Peter Hudson above, they were also used thruout Asia and Thailand. In fact if one Googles Chinese rice storage pot, most references appear to be Thai. Mine of course has Chinese script so the assumption is that it is Chinese.

A very quick response from the guys at NMB. 錦繍前程 – Splendid prospect and using post war simplified Chinese, so a mainland produced item.

Thanks David. Do I take from your answer above that the script reads something like "Good Luck" (Splendid Prospect)?
