This 19th C Visayan sword is from Panay and wears a utilitarian, non-figural hilt. The blade likely dates from the mid-19th C, although the hilt and scabbard may be more recent. The blade shows nice patination consistent with its stated age, and a small central cut out section that was sometimes filled with brass to defeat spells cast by sorcerers. The wooden hilt has a "chicken head" pommel that is often found on tools and utility knives, but in this case is attached to a weapon-grade blade with a hardened edge. The wood has cracked down the back of the hilt. The ferrule is old and created by forge welding a sheet of iron. The ferrule has obviously replaced an older one that was longer. Overall, the hilt has a rubbed appearance from years of use. The scabbard is wood with a leather wrap at the throat.
